Divorce: How to keep stress levels low regarding parenting issues

When you realized your marriage was about to end, you may have started thinking more about your future. Thoughts regarding divorce, as well as where you'll live and how you will divide parenting time, may have occupied your mind. Like most good parents in California, you want what is best for your kids; however, if you and your spouse don't agree on how to interpret that, problems may arise.

It's helpful to discuss issues you know might be potential problem-causers. For instance, if your spouse insists on having your children for all major holidays, perhaps you can negotiate an agreement where they spend holidays with their other parent but summer vacation with you. Then again, if you do not want to be apart from your children on holidays, maybe you can come up with an alternate plan, such as splitting holidays between parents, meaning the kids are at one house for part of the day and then spend the rest of the day with their other parent.

A critical factor in many divorces is remembering that children fare best when provided ample time with both parents. If you and you and spouse are willing to cooperate and compromise for their sakes, things are likely to go a lot more smoothly. It's also a good idea to have legal support on hand in case you encounter a problem you feel ill-equipped to handle on your own.

Divorce is often challenging, but it doesn't necessarily have to be contentious. By asking others what has worked for them and by familiarizing yourself on California custody and visitation laws, you may be able to avoid common pitfalls. Molsby & Bordner, LLP is committed to providing a strong support system for you as every stage of your divorce proceedings.
